Luna´s Castle / Relic Bar

ARCHITECTURE

Client: Luna´s Castle / Bar Relic
Location: Calle 9, Casco Viejo, Panama City
Year: 2012-2015
Area: 90m²
Status: Built

Thew new balcony runs along the old city wall, one of Panama´s most precious historic sites. Therefore the design cleans up earlier constructions that were stuck right up against the monument. The new construction keeps a respectful distance within the very narrow site. The new extension is accessed via a hanging staircase that follows the angled conic shape of the wall which is light flooded form below.

The newly acquired space up top is used as a breakfast terrace for Luna’s Castle Backpackers in the mornings and as a courtyard extension for Relic Bar in the afternoons and nights. The steel and timber construction is mounted on reinforced existing columns of an older extension and cantilevers out over the courtyard and towards the city wall which couldn’t be touched.
